On the Rise!

Welcome to WHRC Elementary

Welcome to the website of Whitman Elementary!

Whitman Elementary is a wonderfully unique public school. We offer a rigorous academic program to include all subject areas. Common Core State Standards guide our curriculum and student learning is challenged on Bloom’s Levels of Cognitive Awareness. Our students are regularly and consistently provided the opportunity to apply real-world applications.

Comprehensive learning is provided through homework/practice, instructional resources, projects, and technology. In addition, Project Excel and Kirk in the Hills offer after school tutoring to assist Whitman students who need added academic support. As a part of the district wide intercessions, students are provided three weeks of extended learning opportunities which focus on reading and math interventions. During this time students are also involved in hands-on science activities and extracurricular activities, such as computers and physical education.
In cooperation with DHS/Pathways, Whitman is committed to involving parents in student learning. DHS/Pathways hold monthly parent meetings that inform and support parents with strategies to help students at home.

We are academically based with “high expectations” for every Whitman student.

    Important Information:
To make the morning and afternoon transitions run smoother, we are enlisting your help. In order to meet the needs of your child and all the students in a safe and responsible manner, we ask that you follow dismissal procedures:

    WALKERS:      Pike Street Side

All walkers, students who get picked up, and /or dropped off, must use the Pike Street side of the building only.

    BUSERS:         Auburn Avenue Side

All students who ride the bus will use the Auburn Avenue side of the building only.  For Safety reasons, we ask that no walkers ever use this entrance to avoid walking between buses.

All visitors must report to the office.  For the safety of all children, parents and visitors are not to remove children from the classroom without visiting the office first.  Teachers are not available during the school day to meet with you about your child. Please call the office to make an appointment.

Early check-out is highly discouraged and your child’s attendance record will reflect the absence.  Children checked out before school is over miss out on important classroom instruction.  All students need to be at school on time and stay the entire day, according to state and school attendance policies.

Last minute dismissal changes:  Due to the high volume of phone calls the office receives during the day, dismissal changes or messages left after 3:30 p.m. cannot be guaranteed to reach your child in time.  Please plan ahead and inform your child how he/she will be getting home before you send them to school.  If there is a change in the normal plan, notify your child’s teacher of any after school dismissal changes in writing.
